energy efficient garden.
7 Star Low Energy Charity Home – Garden Concept
The aim of the garden is to provide an appealing and interesting garden that will also help moderate environmental conditions.
The aim is to provide shade and protection on the westerly aspect. There is a mixture of evergreen and deciduous plantings so as to provide shade in the warmer times of the year but also to allow more light during winter.
All plants are selected due to their hardiness and ability to survive with minimum water.
There is a selection of multi use plants such as the almond and apple trees which as well as their deciduous habit which provides shade in summer and light in winter have the added advantages of seasonal colour with autumn tones and flowers and new growth in spring, also provide edible fruit.
The front garden contains Crepe Myrtles with its multi seasonal features of attractive bark and flowers and orange autumn foliage. These sit amongst a garden of herbaceous perennials and shrubs which illustrate that it is possible to have a lush colourful garden without lots of water.
There is use of local indigenous plants through out all areas of the garden. These have adapted to local Ballarat conditions and even as the climate becomes drier they are still suited to growing in the local area. They also provide food and habitat for local birds, wildlife, insects and their incorporation into all gardens helps with establishing wildlife corridors.
Other areas of mixed shrub plantings incorporate hardy plants that can survive hot, dry conditions.
The rear courtyard incorporates an area for herb and vegetable production. While this is small it allows the gardener to harvest home grown produce with the benefit of freshness but also with minimum environmental impact.
